New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory – The PSAL Night at the Sprints on December 12th was another great, early season indoor meet.

Clinton Belle of Thomas Jefferson HS dominated the boys shot put field (46-3.00). It looks as though Belle is poised to have a breakout season, having already won a number of meets and showing steady progression.

“Never give up,” said Moses Castello-Edward of Lafayeet Ed (above) after narrowly outsprinting Shavan Russell of Evander Child HS in the boys 55m. The two battled to the line, running 6.57 and 6.60, respectively.

Adama Mbye of Taft Education leaped and bounded to a first place finish in the boys triple jump with 43-7.50. Traivon Gilchrist of Thomas Jefferson HS, an accomplished pentathlete, took second with 42-8.00.

Ijeoma-Mir Nwobu of Port Richmond HS, who was last year’s Staten Island Borough Champion, ran away with the girls 55m dash, winning in 7.27 over Ariel Strunkey of Taft Education, who ran 7.32.

Medgar Evers HS athlete Shayla Broughton captured a big win in the girls 55m hurdles, stopping the clock at 8.20. Alyssa Sandy of Paul Robeson HS and Isis Welch of Frederick Douglass HS finished shortly after in 8.51 and 8.52, respectively. Eboni Birch of Campus Magnet HS (above) finished fourth in 8.58 and said, “I started hurdles two years ago and it’s an honor to be running with the big dogs today.”

Medgar Evers went one two in both the prelims and finals of the girls 300m. Brenessa Thompson was able to hold off Janai Cameron, the two finishing in 41.11 and 41.32, respectively.
